Let’s Keep the Whole Grain Momentum Going

Have you heard the news? The Whole Grain Stamp is now on over 4,000 products in 21 countries!

Since 2003, the Whole Grains Council has been promoting whole grains for better health. Now, in 2010, you can walk down any grocery store aisle from New Zealand to South America and you will see the ubiquitous black and gold stamp. Both McDonald’s and Burger King now offer whole grain buns on their chicken sandwiches, and this week Kraft Foods announced that it’s doubling the whole grains in its cracker portfolio, bringing many popular crackers to 100% whole grain. Supermarket data also show that, for the first time, sales of whole wheat bread have surpassed white bread in stores.

To put it in simple terms, we here at Oldways and the Whole Grains Council are PSYCHED! But this is only the beginning.

Want to help us keep the whole grain momentum going? Look out for these two projects coming up this fall:

  • Whole Grains Month in September. Celebrated every year in September, Whole Grains Month features contests, discounts for whole grain-loving companies, and support for health professionals’ educational efforts. This year, among other projects, the WGC is encouraging consumers to participate in a social media campaign called “Whole Grains: Chat ‘Em Up” to spread the word about whole grains. Click for more.
  • The Whole Grains Challenge in October. Now in its fourth year, this national awards program for foodservice outlets draws attention to dining rooms and cafeterias offering at least one whole grain choice every day. Awards are given in ten categories, from fine dining and quick serve to workplace, healthcare and schools – and the entries get more creative every year! Click for more.

Remember, studies show that eating whole grains instead of refined grains lowers the risk of many chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes, with some studies showing reduced risks from as little as one serving daily. Together, we can change the way people eat.

    I’ve looked into the health benefits of whole grains quite a bit and find it hard to ignore the evidence that eating about two servings a day of whole grains lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease by 20%.

    [This is in the general population, compared to those who rarely eat whole grains.]

    I love the Whole Grains Stamp concept, and am thrilled to see it on so many products. But… I really wish the “100%” products were more prominently identified. To me, that’s the mark that really matters.

    It’s not easy enough to tell at a glance if it’s a product with 100% whole grains — even if you know what to look for).

    How about a bigger, bolder “100%” icon? Perhaps a different, brighter color?
